The Japanese 6×6 Type 82 Command and Control Vehicle was developed and built in Japan by Mitsubishi, but due to self imposed Japanese law banning the export of Japanese military hardware, the vehicle is only in service with Japanese Ground Self-Defence Force.

Of course this has meant less foreign financial input in the vehicles development and has driven the production cost up resulting in a high purchase price for the JGSDF, so it is expected that only 250 will enter service.

The need for a wheeled Command and Communications Vehicle was recognised in the 1970’s and following trials of both 4×4 and 6×6 vehicles, the JGSDF went with the 6×6 and accepted the first ten vehicles in to service in 1982.

Driver (das night vision sight) sits front right with accommodation for another serviceman to his left who mans a pintle-mounted 7.62mm MG. The rear section houses the communication and command equipment with seating for 2. The centre section accommodates the engine compartment and corridor linking the front drivers cab with the rear. There is a large rear door in the vehicle and a cupola in the roof with a 12.7mm MG (with a shield) and accessed from the rear section.

The Isuzu water cooled diesel engine generates 305hp, giving an operational range of 500km and 100km/h top road speed.
