The Russian SO-122 aka 2S1 Self Propelled Gun

The Russian SO-122 aka 2S1 Self Propelled Gun is a Cold War era artillery that was designated the M1974 by NATO after it was first spotted in a 1974 Polish Army parade, which also manufactured the vehicle, as well as Bulgaria.

The turret is located in the rear of the hull, whilst the driver and engine are located in the front. The engine is a YaMZ-238N V8 water cooled diesel which generates 300hp. This gives a top road speed of 61.5km/h and operational range of 500km. The vehicle is an amphibious and powered in the water by tracks.

The turret houses the 122mm main gun. It can fire High Explosive rounds to a range of 15.3km and 21.9km with rocket assistants. It can also fire smoke, illumination and HEAT rounds.

The turret, which can rotate a full 360 also accommodates the other 3 crew of the vehicle, with protection against small arms and artillery counter battery splinters and protection against NBC.
