The Fench CHAR ARL-44 Heavy Tank design was conceived during World War 2 in France during the Axis Forces occupation. When liberated, French tank development started up again with first prototypes of the ARL-44 Heavy Tank completed in 1944. The vehicle had a well slopped front, high velocity 90mm main gun and a German Maybach petrol engine captured from German stockpiles.
Low level production started in 1948 which resulted in 50 to 60 vehicles being built, however due to low performance the vehicle was withdrawn from service in the 1950’s.
