The French 6×6 VCR APC Family, aka The Vehicule de Combat a Roues was developed as a provate project by French firm Panhard as 6×6 wheeled Armoured Personnel Carrier, with first examples being completed in 1977. Production for the export model started in 1979.
Variants:
VCR – APC variant accommodates 9 troops and 3 crew. Troops exit rear section through large back door and roof hatch for mounting various MG’s. Commander has a forward cupola with vision periscopes.
VCR/AT – This variant is a repair and recovery, which is equipped with block and tackle as well tools and spares.
VCR/AA – Vehicle is equipped with an Anti-Aircraft RBS-70 SAM system.
VCR/TH – The vehicle is equipped with a turret mounting four ready-to-fire HOT Anti-Tank-Wire-Guided missiles.
VCR/IS – Ambulance variant with a raised superstructure for medical staff to stand up.
VCR/PC – Can be used for either command and control or electronic warfare.
VCR/TT – 4×4 version with hydro jets.
Mobility:
The vehicle uses a V-6 145hp petrol engine, which provides a top road speed of 90km/h and water speed of 4km/h (propelled by its wheels). It has an operational range of 700km.
Manufacturers Optional Extra’s:
NBC protection, winch, air conditioning, night vision, 60mm turret mounted breach loaded mortar, turret mounted 20mm chain gun or ring mounted MILAN Anti-Tank Missile launcher.
The French 6×6 VCR APC Family Operators:
Panhard also developed and manufactured a 6×6 Wheeled Armoured Reconnaissance Vehicle & later as a Tank Destroyer (ERC 90 Sagaire) called the ERC series. So both series share many automotive components and so the VCR was purchased by those nations already using the ERC series.
Argentina – Operate the ERC 90 Lynx as well as VCR.
Gabon – Operate the ERC 90 Sagaire 2 As well as a number sporting turrets with 20mm SPAAG’s for the Anti-Aircraft role as well as VCR.
Mexico – Operate the ERC 90 Lynx for their marines as well as VCR/TT.
