The Swedish STRV 74 Tank was the replacement for the older STRV 42, in fact it was actually a modification of the older tank. It consisted of a new turret fitted to the STRV 42’s hull. The new turret was fitted with a 75mm gun, based on an old anti-aircraft gun. The engine, transmission and track from the old STRV 42 hulls were upgraded, the new tracks being wider than the old. The turret is electrically powered with manual back up.
The STRV 74 was in service with the Swedes from 1958 to 1984. It was replaced by the STRV 102 and 103, when it was used by independent tank companies, later it was relegated to an infantry support role before being finally withdrawn from service in 1984.
The STRV 74 was powered by a Scania-Vabis 170 hp petrol engine, giving it a maximum speed of 45km/h.
